Emily Owens

State Director

Emily Owens has been involved in Science Olympiad since 2011, as a coach, tournament director, VASO board member, and member of the arbitration committee. Her husband, Brandon, has been a building event supervisor for VASO during that time as well, and their collective work with Science Olympiad inspired Brandon to switch careers and become a physics teacher. Their passion for Science Olympiad continues to grow as they work with more and more amazing people and students through VASO.

Ms. Owens was the head coach of Lake Braddock Secondary School's high school Science Olympiad team from 2013-2022. During that time, she oversaw her team of high schoolers as they wrote and supervised events for a Division B invitational tournament. Sharing science with as many students as possible is what makes Science Olympiad so great, and Ms. Owens has enjoyed the opportunity to mentor some of the next generations of event writers, supervisors and volunteers. She is excited to further this work as State Director.

Ms. Owens teaches chemistry at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. She earned a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction for K-12 Science from George Mason University and an M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Ohio.
