Alex Siragy
Director
Alex Siragy is a current coach and former participant in Virginia Science Olympiad. He participated as a member of the Science Olympiad team at James Madison High School in Vienna, VA for three seasons (2004-2007), culminating in participation at the 2007 national tournament. Â
Inspired by his experiences and enjoyment as a participant, Alex founded the Science Olympiad program at Tandem Friends School on his arrival in the 2016-2017 season and continues to coach and manage the program today. The TFSSO program consists of both Division B and Division C teams, with Division C student participation averaging 1 in 4 TFS students in grades 9-12. Alex's work to grow the TFSSO program was honored with the 2026 VASO Coach of the Year award. In addition to Science Olympiad, he is a faculty advisor for Tandem's Model UN program and teaches various science and engineering classes.
Alex has been teaching since 2013 following earning a B.S. in biology from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in biology from Johns Hopkins University. He is passionate about science education and sees it as a process of collaborative discovery with his students. Alex brings this perspective into his work as a VASO board member and aims to facilitate the participation of schools outside of northern Virginia in Science Olympiad as a way to allow students at those schools to explore STEM beyond their standard classroom curriculum.Â
Alex lives in Waynesboro, VA with his wife and son and is a board member for the Augusta County Railroad Museum, where he enjoys educating the public in the history of local railroads and building/maintaining the model railroad layouts at the museum. Consistent with his enjoyment of building and his belief in the educational benefit of hands-on work, Alex works to support the implementation of build events at VASO tournaments.
